Geography
Bulgaria is roughly the same size as England, and is located on the Balkan peninsula surrounded by the Black Sea to the east, Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the West, and Greece and Turkey to the South. This location provides numerous opportunities for easy travel to surrounding countries. However, there is plenty to see within Bulgaria itself. Bulgaria boasts fertile plains and beautiful wooded mountain ranges, including the Balkan range, Rila mountains, and Rhodopes. Places to explore include the Black Sea coast and its villages and resorts, mountain trails and ski resorts, and countless villages and monasteries all over the country.
Climate
Temperate continental with clearly marked four seasons.
A Mediterranean influence is felt in the country's southern regions.
The average annual temperature is 10.5°C.
Tourism
Tourism in Bulgaria is growing by 18%, which is the highest growth rate in Europe. Tourism from the other European countries to Bulgaria is growing even more by 25.3%. There is also growth in winter sports with 28% more tourists visiting Bulgaria in December 2003 compared with December 2002. The price of properties in Bulgaria in 2003 raced ahead by 24/ 28% on average. Economy
Bulgaria is a politically stable country, and the introduction of a currency board in 1997 stabilized the country's economy. Since Bulgaria is to become a full member of the European Union in 2007, Bulgarian laws are improving and changing in accordance with the laws in the countries of EU. Bulgaria has some of the most liberal foreign investment laws in the region. Foreign investment typically assumes one of the following forms: establishing a joint venture with existing companies, state-owned or private; acquiring a company through privatization; setting up a new (green field) venture; or making a portfolio investment.
Real estate prices in Bulgaria are by far lower than other European countries but the scheduled acceptance of Bulgaria in the European Union on 1 January 2007 provides unprecedented growth potential that will certainly boost the prices of Bulgarian real estate in the near future. Bulgarian market or real estate is still unexplored and undeveloped to a certain extent, which makes it very attractive and profitable.
History
The Bulgarian state was founded on the present-day territory of Europe in 681 and ever since that time the name of the country has always been the same. Here are some of the important dates and events in the history of Bulgaria:
• 885 - Cyril and Methodius created the Slavonic script
• 864 - 866 - Bulgaria adopted Christianity
• 1018- 1185 - Bulgaria fell within the limits of the Byzantine Empire and Rule
• 1185 - Restoration of the Bulgarian state
• 1396 - 1878 - Bulgaria was under the Turkish Yoke
• 1878 - 1944 - Bulgaria was a constitutional monarchy
• 1944 - 1989 - Bulgaria was a people's republic, governed by the communist party
Since 10th November 1989 Bulgaria has been a parliamentary democratic republic. |
